The estimated per capita availability of water since the beginning of the century is presented below:

In the beginning of the century, the per capita availability of water was 86 litres a day. This started declining steadily and reached the lowest level of supply ever experienced by the Bangaloreans i.e.45 litres per capita in 1931. Keeping in view the deteriorating position of water supply and continuous rise in population, it was decided to search for new sources of supply, to meet the increased demand. The Experts Committee recomended construction of a dam across the river Arkavathi near Thippagondanahalli about 40 kms. down stream of Hessarghatta reservoir. After the completion of this project in 1933, the water available per capita per day improved substantially.
