Bangalore is the capital of Karnataka state & is a major industrial and technological centre of Southern India.  Bangalore has witnessed rapid increase in population, particularly during the last four decades.In 1941, Bangalore was ranked the Sixteenth city in India by virtue of its population.  As per the 1991 census, Bangalore with a population of 41.30 lakhs, is the sixth largest cities, out
of 23 metropolises in India.  Bangalore urban agglomeration alone accounts for 29.70% or 1/3 of the total urban population of the state.  Bangalore is amongst the fastest growing city in the
country.

The geographical area of Bangalore city, which was only 29 sq. kms. at the beginning of the century, expanded to 482 sq. kms.by 1997.  The population has also increased identically from 1.63 lakhs in
1901 to about 52.10 lakhs in 1997.
